Washington, D.C., October 11, 2025 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods, on top of the existing 30% duties, starting November 1 or sooner. The move marks a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies after months of relative calm.

“The United States of America will impose a Tariff of 100% on China, over and above any Tariff that they are currently paying,” Trump said Friday on Truth Social. “Also on November 1st, we will impose Export Controls on any and all critical software.”

The decision comes in response to Beijing’s tightening export controls on rare earth elements — critical materials for electronics manufacturing. In the same announcement, Trump hinted that a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea later this month has been called off.

The news sent shockwaves through global financial markets. Following Trump’s remarks, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 878 points (1.9%), the S&P 500 fell 2.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite plunged 3.5%, as investors feared a repeat of previous tariff wars that roiled global supply chains.

While Trump has previously made similar threats without immediate follow-through, analysts warn that this latest announcement could signal a renewed trade confrontation that may affect technology, manufacturing, and consumer goods sectors. Businesses are bracing for potential cost increases and disruptions if the tariffs take effect.

Experts say that the move could reignite global trade instability and pressure multinational companies heavily dependent on Chinese imports. The White House has not yet commented on the proposed measures or whether negotiations with Beijing will resume.
